(d) Industrial Warehousing Questions

Answers, First Paragraph First

All questions →
Space planning
How much warehouse space do I need for 500 pallets?

500 standard 48x40 in pallets typically require roughly 6,000 to 12,000 sq ft of total warehouse space. Racked three levels high with normal aisles, the storage area alone is around 3,500–4,500 sq ft; add aisles, staging, dock area and operating space and the realistic total lands between 6,000 and 12,000 sq ft depending on whether the product can be racked or must sit on the floor.

Space planning
How much warehouse space do I need for 1,000 pallets?

1,000 standard 48x40 in pallets typically require roughly 12,000 to 22,000 sq ft of total warehouse space. Racked three high, expect 12,000–16,000 sq ft; on the floor with no stacking, expect 18,000–22,000 sq ft once aisles, staging and dock area are included.

Cost
How much does industrial warehousing cost?

Industrial warehousing is priced three ways: per pallet position per month, per square foot per month, or as a dedicated lease plus labor. Rates vary widely by market, commodity and term, and any number quoted without knowing your pallet dimensions, throughput and dwell time is guesswork. The reliable way to get a real figure is to describe the freight and get market pricing back.

Cost
How much does pallet storage cost?

Pallet storage is quoted per pallet position per month, and the rate depends on market, pallet dimensions, pallet height, whether the pallet can be racked, and how long it stays. Storage is almost always quoted separately from handling, so the monthly storage rate alone never represents your total cost.

Cost
How much does container storage cost?

Storing a loaded container is usually the most expensive way to hold inventory, because you can be paying three things at once: terminal demurrage while the box sits at the port, per diem to the steamship line for keeping their equipment, and yard storage if the container is moved to a private lot. Past roughly the first week, stripping the freight into a warehouse is normally cheaper.

Operations
What is transloading?

Transloading is transferring freight from one container, trailer or transport mode into another. For importers, it almost always means stripping a 20 ft or 40 ft ocean container near the port and reloading the freight into 53 ft domestic trailers or railcars for inland movement. It releases the ocean container quickly and usually reduces inland freight cost.
